One of my first serious attempts to build a hifi audio power amplifier was the JHL hood amplifier. The design looked rather simple and many people were enthusiastic about it’s performance. So I decided to build one for myself, mainly because of the following 2 points:
- Only a few components
- Single power supply, so easy testing since I had only one power supply available at that time.
General information about this amplifier can be found at the following website: http://www.tcaas.btinternet.co.uk/index-1.htm
The original schematic is given below
Because most transistors are not available any more, I used the proposed counterparts from this article.
- Tr4:BC557B
- TR3: 2N1711
- TR1/Tr2: TIP3055
Because of some problems I finally replaced the 2N1711 with a BC547B
The sound is not bad, but to be honest I can’t say that it was better that my simple Philips audio set.
A ltspice file with the schematic can be found here.
